30 years ago, the “Chemdog” strain was born. Its creator, Greg Krzanowski, affectionately nicknamed after his creation, was gifted it while getting on the bus for the Grateful Dead’s 1991 tour. After finding 13 seeds in an East Coast shipment, Greg went right to work, cultivating what we know today as “Chemdog.”
30 years later, Krzanowski’s legacy is alive and well. Now the Director of Cultivation at CannaProvisions, his “Smash Hits” flower line brings the old school to the new school, mixing his original Chemdog strains with more recent strains.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Krzanowski to talk about his process, his love of the plant, and what he sees for the future of cannabis in Massachusetts.
One of the first things we wanted to know was his favorite show from that ‘91 tour. Chemdog told us that his favorite shows were the Giants Stadium shows from June 16th and 17th. Listening to these shows, we can paint a picture of the culture back then. To listen for yourself, click here.
We talked a little more about what makes Smash Hits so special. Chemdog let us know that he shares the same vision with CannaProvisions’ owners. “We are for the people and [we] want to provide the best flower we can,” says Krzanowski.
The legacy of the Chemdog strain is also a great story. Without it, we wouldn’t have crowd-favorite strains, like “Sour Diesel.” This makes Krzanowski “very happy. It’s incredible how many strains the Chemdog is in nowadays.”
Krzanowski’s favorite part of the growing process is “harvesting the fruits,” which is a testament to his work ethic. Seeing a plant through to completion is something that Chemdog values, and its a poignant way to look at life.
Looking towards the future, we can never truly know what lies in store. Krzanowski believes that the road ahead is tough, but “Smash Hits makes us special,” so I believe that we’ll be seeing Chemdog for a long time.
We asked Chemdog to use 3 words to describe the last 10 years. “Hustling, grateful, loved.”
